Team Debo • Using Faith, Food and Fitness to Fight

Little did Zack and I know when we were diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis in 1986 and 1983, at the ages of six months and three months, that our greatest challenge in life would eventually lead us straight to our greatest blessings.

Just Breathe

Before having kids I was never an athlete, never really active. I didn’t even play sports as a kid. Motherhood has a way of changing you.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Many sunrises and sunsets in 2016 but I had a special surprise on New Year’s Eve as the year was soon to end. I was driving through Ventura and saw a great rainbow arched from the hillside to the ocean. A rainbow is a rare occasion in Ventura as we have been in a severe drought for several years.

Go For It!

Let’s be honest, having Cystic Fibrosis is no fun at all. There are always a million things you have to do, whether it’s doctors’ visits, pills to take or treatments to do, things start to become exhausting and you can lose sight of the things that really matter. We get so caught up with doing what we need to do sometimes we neglect the things we should do.

The Most Important Meal of the Day

Breakfast. One of the most important meals of the day. Start your day off with a healthy and hearty breakfast full of healthy fats and you’re set for the day!

You guys asked, and now you get it. Breakfast ideas. You all ask often for healthier breakfast options that are easy to make. I’ve chosen to share with you three of my go to breakfast options. All are as easy or involved as you want them to be. All of them give you endless options for flavor combinations so you never get bored, and all of them allow you to be creative and choose what you like!

Find Your Passion

My name is Ashlee Skow and I have been awarded four Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation grants in my lifetime and I truly believe they have helped saved my life. Because of CFLF I am a certified yoga instructor who teaches around my town and in the summer I am able to lead Paddle Board Yoga classes on Lake Tahoe. Cystic Fibrosis will never be easy but with these grants I was able to attend classes and yoga teacher trainings even if I was unable to work due to my health. Physical fitness is honestly one of the most important aspects of my health routine.

Counting My Blessings

The other day, I heard the old Rosemary Clooney song “Counting Your Blessings” in the car.  Usually when I hear this song, my mind flits to Ms. Clooney’s uber-handsome offspring, whom I admire for a moment until I get bored and change the station.  But this time, I stayed the course and listened to the full song.  For those who aren’t holiday music aficionados, this oldie but goodie encourages those who are sleep-challenged to count not sheep, but our blessings.

Why our Recreation Grant Program is So Important (and why you should support it today!)

Lots of the people I interact with for my job, as the Program Coordinator for the CFLF, (especially people applying for, or receiving a grant) are shocked to find out that I, too, have Cystic Fibrosis. When I tell someone that I have CF there is a certain understanding felt between us, because they know that I “get it.”

Critical Thinking: A Survival Skill With CF

Brians Sink Hole

Critical thinking is not just thinking, but is thinking which entails self-improvement. Most people with cystic fibrosis whom I have known are experts in their own body, their experience with CF, and fine tuning of treatments and medications to maximize their own quality of life. They posess critical thinking skills: "self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking", qualities that are all conducive to living successfully with a chronic condition.

Secrets of living and thriving with CF

Surviving CF and CF-related diabetes for over 45 years, despite the heavy burdens of the conditions, has made me appreciate what having a life unlimited can look like.

I respect my illnesses 100%, know my many limitations and look to avoid the ‘CF banana skin’ of trying to dismiss it and not take it seriously enough.
